Research Trends in Endangered Subalpine Conifers
- A Structural Topic Modeling Analysis -

Abstract

This study analyzed research trends in seven endangered subalpine conifer species based on articles published in Korean academic journals between 2004 and 2025, using structural topic modeling (STM). Studies on Abies koreana (Korean fir) and Abies nephrolepis (Khingan fir) accounted for 63.6% of the total, whereas studies focusing exclusively on Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii (Dwarf juniper) and Thuja koraiensis (Korean arborvitae) were extremely rare, indicating a pronounced species-level imbalance in research. Among the identified topics, phytosociological community classification, genetic diversity and functional traits, and tree growth and mortality mechanisms were relatively prominent, whereas genetic and physiological responses to drought stress were the least represented. Before and after the announcement of conservation measures in 2016, topics related to climate change and habitat distribution increased, while the proportion of research on genetic diversity and functional traits decreased. These changes may have been influenced by multiple factors, including advances in spatial analysis and remote-sensing technologies, changes in research support programs, and the uneven distribution of research across species. Future conservation research should maintain existing distribution and habitat monitoring while expanding investigations into the phytosociological characteristics and population structure of under-researched species and examining their responses to environmental stress over the long term.
